Guay Tiew Reua (Thai Boat Noodles)

You will be surprised that sometimes the best food is not served in fancy, expensive restaurants. In fact, those family-owned local stalls and restaurant are often the ones serving the best Thai dishes. Back in the old days when Ayyuthaya was the capital of Thailand and connected by canals, Sampan is one of the important mode of transportation. Merchants were mostly selling noodles with a Sampan in the floating markets. Hence, they named it as Boat Noodles. Today, you can find this dish almost everywhere in Thailand and you are still able to see how Boat Noodles are being sold in a traditional way in most of the famous floating markets in Thailand.

Pla Pao (Thai Salt Grilled Fish)

Thai salt grilled fish is a common sight in local Thai food scene. You can normally see vendors selling them on streets or in the local restaurants. It is a perfect definition of a simple yet amazing Thai dish and usually served with Tilapia, Red Snapper or Sea Bass. The fish is stuffed with different types of aromatic herbs such as lemongrass, galangal and kaffir lime leaves, then grilled over charcoal after covered with a thick layer of salt.

When you scrap off the harden salt layer, you will find the juiciest and most tender piece of flesh beneath the fish skin. We really love the strong herbs aroma. Remember to also eat it with the signature Thai garlic chilli seafood dipping sauce. We bet you can finish two bowls of rice!

Pla Kapong Neung Manao (Thai Style Steamed Fish)

Thai style lime and garlic steamed fish is also a dish we highly recommend everyone to try when you are in Thailand. If you are a lover of sour and spicy food, this is a dish you cannot miss!

It is basically Tilapia or Barramundi fish, steamed with a broth of fresh lime juice, garlic, fish sauce, chillies, and herbs. Drink the broth at your own risk as it will wake every part of your body cells up. This dish is so appetizing that you can’t stop eating spoon after spoon and you will keep craving for it over and over again.

Tom Yum (Thai Spicy & Sour Soup)

When we think about Thailand, Tom Yum is definitely the first thing that pops up in the mind. This signature Thai dish is a bowl of goodness with its bold and aromatic taste. Usually served with Goong (Prawn) or Gai (Chicken) cooked in a broth with full of fresh herbs such as lemongrass, ginger, kaffir lime leaves, chilli, fish sauce and lime juice. It is very appetising, spicy and sour at the same time.

Pad Thai (Fried Noodle)

One of the reason we love Thai Food is because of how appetizing they are. Pad Thai is the national dish of Thailand and this is the dish that you cannot miss when you visit Thailand. It is a stir-fried rice noodle dish commonly served as street food and in most Thai restaurants. The sweet and savoury sauce made with the combination of fish sauce, tamarind paste and palm sugar is what makes Pad Thai so delicious. The noodles are typically stir-fried with bean sprouts, scallion, tofu, egg and meat (Chicken or Prawn). Pad Thai is ready to be served after it is scattered with crushed peanuts and some chilli flakes. It is so difficult to resist this yummy dish with the perfect blend of sweet, savoury and piquant flavours.

Pad Kra Pao (Fried Thai Basil)

If you can’t take spicy food or when you don’t know what to order in a Thai restaurant, this is the dish for you to die for. The Fried Thai Basil is an aromatic dish will only leave you wanting for more. It is a quick and simple dish which manage to tantalise your tastebuds with the heavenly flavours. Stir fry minced pork or chicken with garlic, oyster sauce, soy sauce and lastly add in Thai basil. It is irresistibly good and best to have it with a bowl of fragrant Thai Jasmine rice.

Thai Pancake

Our another favourite would be these Thai pancakes! It is a dessert version of savoury “Roti Canai” we have in Malaysia, where we dipped it in Curry. We love the Thai version where people spread Nutella and drizzle condensed milk on it. The classic and most popular Thai pancake will be the one stuffed with bananas. Pastry-like crunchy outer layer and soft doughy-like fillings. Definitely must try if you are a sweet tooth!

Khanom Buang (Thai Crispy Crepe)

Kanom Buang is a Thai dessert or snack known as crispy crepe. This crepe look like mini tacos filled with cream. Usually sold by some street vendors by the roadside. They are stuffed with cream and sweet or savoury toppings like shredded coconut and fried duck egg yolk strips. The golden brown crepe is crispy when you first bite it and straight after that you can taste the soft fillings. Sweet in the beginning with a hint of savoury at the end. These cute tiny evils are very delicious, addictive and high in calories! So make sure you do not consume so much of them.

Mango Sticky Rice

Mango Sticky Rice is our favourite Thai dishes and it can be found literally everywhere in Thailand. You don’t actually have to go for fancy ones in restaurants. With less than THB 100 (MYR 13 / USD 4), you can enjoy the best Thai Mango Sticky Rice on the streets or in the night market. This traditional Thai dessert is made with sticky glutinous rice cooked with coconut milk, sugar and pandan leaves (Asian Vanilla). It might look simple with just sticky rice and mango but trust us, this is really the beloved dessert of everyone as no one can say no to the aromatic and honey sweet Thai mangoes!
